Come on come back

On the field of Austerlitz where it was pitch black and there seemed to be no sign of life anywhere. Taking anxious footsteps and making sure i made as little noise as i could, i then heard a unusual tapping noise in the distance. I squinted my eyes in order to focus on the target and it seemed like i was looking at a tramautised girl, i asked myself if this was possible, if maybe my eyes were decieving me. But no they eyes dont lie.

Classwork-poem

Classwork 06.1.15

Suddenly he awoke and was running- raw
In raw-seamed hot khaki, his sweat heavy,
Stumbling across a field of clods towards a green hedge
That dazzled with rifle fire, hearing
Bullets smacking the belly out of the air –
He lugged a rifle numb as a smashed arm;
The patriotic tear that had brimmed in his eye
Sweating like molten iron from the centre of his chest, –
In bewilderment then he almost stopped –
In what cold clockwork of the stars and the nations
Was he the hand pointing that second? He was running
Like a man who has jumped up in the dark and runs
Listening between his footfalls for the reason
Of his still running, and his foot hung like
Statuary in mid-stride. Then the shot-slashed furrows
Threw up a yellow hare that rolled like a flame
And crawled in a threshing circle, its mouth wide
Open silent, its eyes standing out.
He plunged past with his bayonet toward the green hedge,
King, honour, human dignity, etcetera
Dropped like luxuries in a yelling alarm
To get out of that blue crackling air
His terror’s touchy dynamite.

What is the poem about?
It describes the experience of ‘going over-the-top’. This was when soldiers hiding in trenches were ordered to ‘fix bayonets’ (attach the long knives to the end of their rifles) and climb out of the trenches to charge an enemy position twenty or thirty metres away. The aim was to capture the enemy trench. The poem describes how this process transforms a solider from a living thinking person into a dangerous weapon of war.

How is hypocricy shown in Chp24

In chapter 24 a lot of things happen and one main one is Tom Robinson was killed and shot 17 times. One character that we haven’t seen throught the book is Ms Merriweather. She is a member of the Maycomb County and in the chapter she is invited to Atticus’s house along with other women in the society.

Hypocrisy is shown in this chapter when Ms Merriweather, the new character is hypocritical about her view on black people both within the tribe of Africa,(the Mrunars) and the black people of Maycomb.

Task 1: How does Harper Lee prepare us for the verdict of the trial?

“The feeling grew until the atmophere in the court-room was exactly the same as a cold Febuary morning”

This quotation prepares us for the verdict by explaing the atmosphere in the court-room as a “cold February morning”. This quotation creates an image in our head, that the atmosphere is depressing and miserable.

IGCSE Coursework Component 1 – There is No Longer a Need for Public Libraries

Libraries a space established by Thomas Bodley in 1602. A space that has influenced both young and old people. I think we can all agree that we have been to the library at least once in our lifetime, and we have seen how it has helped many people and closing it down would be an outrage. Libraries are something we as one should appreciate, it is a space where we can think, read, relax and most of all meditate. Its a time where we let all our thoughts disappear into the book.

Neil Gaiman argued in response of the closing of hundreds of libraries across the UK ” We have an obligation to support libraries. To use libraries, to encourage others to use libraries, to protest the closure of libraries. If you do not value libraries, then you do not value information or culture or wisdom. You are silencing the voices of the past and damaging the future.” I highly support this response by Neil Gaiman and especially the last part when talking about how it will damage the future. I think that the future need to be entitled to the use of libraries its something where not many kids and adults are provided with worldwide.

I understand there has been a conception that libraries have been dying out due to the development of internet over the past years. The internet a very powerful thing that is a major component within any electrical device in the 20th century. These electrical devices in my opinion has isolated many people in understanding the major aspects of a library and have forgot that libraries allow people to roam the internet free of charge to join the digital platform and a key in extracting information via the internet.

There is also a major issue with IT literacy. Many of those that don’t inherit any broadband access in order to join the digital divide are the ones who are most affected the most. Statistics show, not everyone has broadband access, let alone internet access. In 2009 it showed that 63% of the UK population have broadband, meaning that many are missing this component within their life. It is seen that more than 10 million adults in the UK have never used the internet. However, this is why libraries are within our infrastructure, they not only allow the access to the internet but they are also trained in using the internet appropriately which has been a trait that has been passed for years.

In the 21st century money has become a big problem for some people. Many cannot afford resources that will enhance theirs or their children’s intelligence. In this specific example is books. Books are something that have been around for years and years and it is a privilege for some young kids and adults to be able to own one. But we have libraries to provide books for us and not allow people to waste a lot of money. Without libraries, think about how much money people will spend on books if the government consider on closing public libraries. Think about how many people will be missing out on such a big aspect in their life. Yet again it is morally wrong to close such a precious building. Wait, think about communities in itself, I mean imagine how big of a loss it will be to poor communities when they hear that the closure of libraries will proceed, it will emotionally crush them because from this point on they are not able to afford things such as books.

Libraries play a massive role within our lives. They need reinforcing, not destroying. We need to interconnect the gap between the people whom are blinded by the new technology surrounding our lives and those who have no access to either facilities. However, if the service is cut, we run a risk of an ill, unknowledgeable society that will lie on the conscience of the people who are not defending it.

Did you ever go to the library?

Would you want to close such a valuable building down?

Think how the closure of libraries will affect the young generation?

How is tension created in chapter 10?

In chapter 15 the trial for tom robinson is near and they move him to Maycomb jail, which is described as the most venerable and hideous of the county’s buildings. There is a graduate build up in tension when Atticus goes to meet up with tom robinson, in order to keep him safe from the lynch mob that has arisen and is worried for tom robinson safety. As time passes by scout, jem and dill appear at maycomb jail, with intention to suprise him but find themselves doing the opposite.”I thought he would have a fine surprise, but his face killed my joy” this quote is told by Jean Louise Finch, who is narrating on account of Scout’s version of events retrospectively. On top of that this quote back up point about how tension is created  because the quote itself depicts happiness turning into sadness. I feel sympathy for Scout because her intention was not to make Atticus angry and because she is so young which explains why she wants to know alot of things.

How is Calpurnia’s identity shown in chapter 12 of TKAM

In chapter 12 calpurnia’s identity is shown massively because she is told by Scout that she has a ‘double life’, meaning she is unsure of her identity. This happens when Calpurnia sends Jem and Scout to a black church and they seem to find that Calpurnia is acting differeny towards them, instead of her normal. Moreover, Jem and Scout find out a shocking mystery, that Calpurnia has a child who barely knows him. She also barely acknowledeges her birthday, which makes us believe that Scout is right and Calpurnia is living a double life. We start to feel alot of sympathy for Calpurnia because she has put her social life beside and focused more on being a housewife for the finches.

Chapter 9 Summary

At school, Scout nearly starts a fight with a classmate named Cecil Jacobs after Cecil declares that “Scout Finch’s daddy defends niggers.” Atticus has been asked to defend Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a white woman. It is a case he cannot hope to win, but he tells Scout that he must argue it to uphold his sense of justice and self-respect.

At christmas time Atticus’s brother, Jack, comes to stay with Atticus for a week during the holidays. Scout usally gets along greatly with Uncle Jack but when he arrives in Maycomb she starts to curse alot which she has been picking up lately. After supper Uncle Jack sits Scout on his lap and warns her not to curse in his presence. On Christmas Day, Atticus takes his children and Jack to Finch’s Landing, a rambling old house in the country where Atticus’s sister, Alexandra, and her husband live. Whilst staying there Scout meets Aunt Alexandera’s son called ‘Francis’ and Scout thinks Francis is the most “boring” child she has ever met. She also has to put up with the prim and proper Alexandra, who insists that Scout should dress like a lady instead of wearing pants. One night, Francis tells Scout that Dill is a runt and then calls Atticus a “nigger-lover.” Scout is furious and as a consequence she curses him and beats him up. Francis tells Alexandra and Uncle Jack that Scout hit him, and Uncle Jack spanks her without hearing her side of the story. After Uncle Jack punished her she becomes really really angry and says ‘ill never speak to you again as long as I live! I hate you an’ despise you an’ hope you die tomorrow!’

After they return to Maycomb, Scout tells Jack what Francis said and Jack becomes furious. Scout makes him promise not to tell Atticus. Jack promises and keeps his word. Later, Scout overhears Atticus telling Jack that Tom Robinson is innocent but doomed.
